Like daisies
thru the crack in a sidewalk, in a time most hospitable to haunters,
haunted attractions are springing up in nearly any space that can
hold them...
this was the case of Bennett's Curse, located on the property surrounding
the Arundel Mills Mall. A completely temporary structure, Alan Bennett
and his crew begin assembling the facade in August to have completion
done by mid September, standard opening for the season.
We first met up with Alan Bennett at the 2002 Horrorfind
convention, he shared a room with the folks at Castle Blood, and
was one of our first encounters with the now standard, Stalk Around....
we had no idea at the time that this would be the haunters first
year at running his own attraction.
While
we waited for Alan to become available (it was opening night) we
chatted with Mrs. Bennett who was working the ticket booth. We could
not help but notice several of the actors walking around dressed
in medieval clothing to match the castle facade, all made courtesy
of her sister... We also met Alan's nephew... a charming young lad
about waist high who asked us "You know you're gonna die, right?"
We explained that no, we did NOT know that and he assured us we
would...
Alan broke free from his place within the house
for a few minutes and graced us with a walk thru of the attraction,
and we could definitely see the potential of the haunter... his
cast was enthusiastic and quite a bit of money and effort had gone
into the props thought the "newness" of everthing was
a minor detractor from the atmosphere.
Upon
entering the building, one of your first encounters is a labratory
scene, everyone brought into the room before a table where we would
be addressed by one of the energetic actors. Several props would
be utilized, including spraying the crowd with "blood"
as the sawing of flesh does not go neatly behind that white curtain,
but we were disappointed that the "Bad Baby" prop resting
on the floor in the background would not be utilized, we had only
seen the prop in trade mags, never used in any of the haunts.
Walking thru haunted halls, we would come across
other scenes such as a well done graveyard featuring pneumatic props
as well as live actors, and a confusing scene of a "Xena"
type warrior mannequin leaning over her victim's (?) skeletal remains.
With the entire attraction taking place in the castle, the scenes
seemed to lack a cohesive storyline, which we had thought was to
be a "vampire" theme. Definitely a haunt in it's fledgling
stage, but we expect good things to come in the passing years as
the shine of the newer props fade, and the young haunter finds his
footing, allowing
the imaginitive heart of Bennett's Curse to catapult them to place
among Maryland's permier haunts. Definitely worth a stop if you
are in the area, and give them our best regards.
