Well Kids,
here we are at the end of another season. We lucked out that a few
haunters decided to extend their hours thru this weekend (and some
would have liked to, but it seems that township ordinances won’t
allow many of them to operate in to November…). While the weather
turned cold locally this weekend, we certainly hope the additional
days aided the proprietors of these haunts, as rainy weather put a
damper on many of their evenings. So sad after a summer of drought
warnings….
The “last hurrah” was at Shocktoberfest in
Reading PA, and we’re happy to say, it ended with a bang! What
an awesome hayride! Hands down, the best one we had been to all season.
Their detail was amazing and their staff were among the most enthusiastic
of “scharactors” that we have come across this season,
and they should be commended for a fantastic job. (Brian and I can
hardly wait to check out their summer venture at the Jersey Shore
“Zombie World”).
Sunday the 27th, we visited Eastern State Penitentiary,
the most absolutely amazing building. This intimidating historical
monument housed three attractions, and proceeds benefit the maintenance
of the landmark. On a walk thru with Sean Kelly, the Program Director
for the prison, we learned a little about the history behind the structure
as well as some of the peculiarities of working in such a setting….
Stay tuned for this review.
Friday the 25th, we made our way to The Original Haunted Hayride.
We liked the set up for the hayride, not as far removed from the action
as most other hayrides, we were actually able to sit on the edge of
the wagon, feet dangling.
I’m sorry to say, I missed the Festival of Fears, but Brian
and Vince managed to make it to the event. Hosting 4 attractions (5
if you counted the haunted mini-golf) in another great old building
that I’m sorry to say we are going to lose over the next year
in the name of “progress.” Seems it will be torn down….
We’ll keep you posted about where to find Doc Fright next year….
Before that, we were in Florida for ten days…..
leaving Philadelphia on the 11th and returning on the 21st, we visited
Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights twice (well, more like one
and a half, REALLY bad weather severely hindered our first night there).
A decent event in it’s own right, this event’s biggest
obstacle was being in the shadows of 11 winning events at USF. Without
this comparison, the event may have fared better with visitors, and
the jury is out on whether it can be called a success. Our second
night at the park, we met with the Travel Channel for an upcoming
special on the event. If we make it thru the editing process, you
should see us some time next fall, we’ll let you know when the
show will air as soon as we have an exact date. We also visited Busch
Gardens for the first time for Howl-O-Scream… another astounding
event that we look forward to visiting again, as we feel they will
only get better….
Prior to the trip, we visited Shadybrook Farms Horrorfest,
going for the “family” market, they produced a hayride
that while not scary, was wildly entertaining. Again, another great
cast…. (there is something to be said for paid casts versus
“volunteers”).
The previous night we spent over an hour wandering around
the amazing 2 mile cornfield maze at Scarecrow Hollow. You have to
love a maze where you are given a “flag” upon entering,
in the event that you get too lost to find your way out, (though there
is a game attached to this maze, the quest is not to find your way
out, but to find ten clues).
Friday the 4th, we visited River’s Edge Hayride.
One of the smaller attractions in the area, but well known as it is
one of the oldest….
September 29th we were happy to meet up once again with
the crew of Frightland (one of our favorite haunts) for their R.I.P.
night. Complete with fireworks and a visit from the governor, it was
another great evening in St. Georges, DE.
And all the way back to the beginning, we kicked off the season with
Field of Screams, where in “The Den of Darkness” we encountered
the surprise that has been unsurpassed all season. As much as I’d
love to tell you…. You will have to check back for the story
on that one….
In the summer months, we began to gear up for the season
with a visit to Horrorfind Weekend in August. A fabulous time with
interesting seminars, great people, a fun costume contest, and the
cast of the Evil Dead. The story to be posted soon.
We were sorry that we did not manage to make it back to Zombie Xtreme
this fall, we had such a great time visiting them this summer at the
boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ. They had great plans to shut down
for a few weeks at summer’s end and to reopen with some new
surprises for the Halloween crowds. More on our summertime visit to
follow….
We hope you all had as much fun this fall as we have,
and we look forward to bringing you the stories on these attractions
in the months to come. If you haven’t already, sign up for our
mailing list to receive notifications as new stories are posted….
Our best to you all….. Warmest
