River's Edge
Cinnaminson, NJ
Once upon a time in NJ, the haunts were few. One of the original attractions and one of the haunts that stood out among the best was River’s Edge Haunted Hayride in Cinnaminson NJ. This little haunt that at one time consisted only of a hayride was nestled in the woods and the tractor would work it’s way thru the brush and living up to it’s name, would wander down a path along the Delaware River.
Today, the haunt still stands, and the actors and “behind the scenes” staff we met still have the enthusiasm of true haunters, but the owners of this once legendary hayride have lost the thrill of the kill and sadly continue the event for the revenue it still brings in (Though I’m certain it is not nearly what it was in this attraction’s hey-day). This factor is even evident in their website, photos from the attraction are dated from 2000.
We visited the local attraction that boasted the hayride and walk thru that had been added a few years ago, “The Psycho Path,” on yet another evening threatening rain (thus our desire to stay so local) and met with Joe the owner and members of the staff.
On entering the grounds, one is greeted by a large storage trailer with great illustrations matching the façade of the Psych Path. Their artwork was one of the more commendable features of this location.
In front of the trail, in the fenced in courtyard sits the carriage of a horse drawn hearse…. Built by their staff, it is one of several original props of the attraction. Walking the grounds was a large troll type creature… not very scary and appearing to be a little sleepy he watched the gateway between the hayride and the path.
The Psycho Path encompassed several different traditional themes. We passed thru prison / dungeon scenes, into the River’s Edge Mortuary. Here we met a great staff (who showed us how to best utilize a coffin…. Was their “goodie drawer!”). Enthusiastic about their work, they did a great job of manning this section of the attraction. The use of a few pneumatic props added to the element of surprise. Leaving the mortuary, we ventured forward onto the path, thru alien ruins and past demonic alters.
Onto the hayride, where our tractor driver offered us bug spray (now who says people in NJ aren’t hospitable?). Over the river and thru the woods, (wait, wrong season), over the path and along the river we traveled, thru a cemetery and past the psycho meat market we survived encounters with chainsaw wielding maniacs. A traditional hayride that let off in an open field complete with bonfires for roasting marshmallows or melting the side of your face off (the hottest bonfires we have ever experienced!) and where cider was available.
Not a complete waste of an evening but one I would be hard-pressed to want to put forth $15 per person for. Our hats off to the actors and creative staff that worked to bring life to this attraction. As for the owners, maybe the ghost of Halloween past will visit them one Hallow’s Eve and show them the error of their ways. That Halloween is not about nickels and dimes, but a spirit that lies in the heart of every true haunter… and with that, they will work to foster the enthusiasm of their staff bringing their event up to it’s potential and on par with other local attractions.
